Children's TV star 'apologized' to fans in final statement before tragic death

Children’s TV star, Paul Reubens, best known for playing the character Pee-wee Herman, has sadly died at the age of 70 after a secret cancer battle.

Paul had been fighting cancer for a number of years, however, decided to keep it private. Fans around the world will fondly remember the star for his iconic character that delighted children and adults across the globe.

Paul Reubens ‘bravely fought cancer for years’

The news of Paul Reubens’ tragic death was announced via a statement on his Instagram, posted on July 31 which concluded:

“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

The post contained three images, a second was a statement from the beloved actor as he apologized for not going public with his six-year fight with cancer.

In the statement, he wrote:

“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters. I have loved you so much and have enjoyed making art for you.”

Tributes come pouring in for the star

Tributes for the star have been pouring in from celebrity faces and fans across the globe as they remember the iconic actor.

Comedian Brandon Rogers wrote: “Thank you for making the world a better place, Paul!”

“Paul – you were the kindest and most generous of spirits. I will never have another birthday without thinking of the pictures and videos you would send all day. you always made me feel so loved and special. I hope to be half the friend you were. you are missed. love you forever, peewee,” penned Sara Gilbert.

One fan said: “We will miss you. Thank you for making us smile.”

“You brought joy to millions, including myself. Rest easy Paul,” penned another.

Paul Reubens’ career explored

Reubens’ career began in the 1960s and had credits in a huge number of popular TV shows, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and movies including Batman Returns in 1992.

Of course, he was most famously known across the globe for his character Pee-wee Herman. The fictional character first developed a highly successful live stage act, which then turned into a HBO special.

Pee-wee then went to the big screen in 1985, in the film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.

In 1986, the show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse aired on CBS, which became an Emmy Award Winning Children’s series, airing for five years.
